What is responsive web design?

Today more than ever, people are using portable devices to access the internet. Until responsive web design was introduced, most websites didn’t work on these devices, being primarily designed to work on desktop computers and laptops with much larger screen dimensions.

Today, the mobile internet is not only a reality, but is also a user friendly and convenient way for people to visit websites. Responsive design uses scalable images and adjustable layouts which can be adapted to most any type of mobile device’s settings or screen dimensions. Making use of responsive web design, companies are now able to increase the reach of their websites to their targeted audience.

One of the major ideas involving responsive website design is a fluid grid. This technology allows the site’s layout to adapt or fit onto any screen dimension, from a mobile device to a PC. By evenly resizing the screen in width, all of the elements present in a specified layout are completely visible on a mobile device as if they were natively designed for that device.

Responsive web design typically uses media queries from css3+, although there are other methods, such as through the use of JavaScript.

Without the use of responsive web design, site owners will often have to provide their prospective visitors with a different URL in order for them to be able to access the site on a device other than a mobile device. This can quickly turn into a big inconvenience for those who are looking for easy and quick access to online information, and can also be much harder and more costly to manage in the long term, needing to maintain a separate website for mobile devices.
